England have ensured that they will not bat another time in this first test here at Chepauk. They have batted the whole of first 2 days and a whopping 180 overs to post 555 runs for the loss of 8 wickets at stumps day 2. Indian bowlers did bowl well and they ensured that England are not scoring runs at a rapid pace even though there is nothing on offer in this wicket.
Ben Stokes and Joe Root were batting majestically and they added 124 runs for the 4th wicket in which Ben Stokes was the chief contributor with 82 runs off just 118 balls. He took the attack to Indian bowlers and tried his best to score at a fast rate.
At one stage it looked like he was set for a huge score but Shahbaz Nadeem’s consistent bowling along with some insights from Virat Kohli stopped Ben Stokes from reaching 3 digit mark. Here’s the video in which Virat Kohli talks with Shahbaz Nadeem before the wicket ball.
Joe Root was the top scorer for England with yet another double century, his 2nd in 3 tests in the year 2021. The interesting thing although is England haven’t declared even after having scored 555 runs on the board. It is understandable to some extent because England lost the test at Chennai in 2016 after having scored 477 runs un the 1st innings.
In all likelihood, England will declare their innings in the first hour of day 3’s play and they would be hoping to get 20 Indian wickets in the next 7 sessions where the pitch will wear out in the last 2 days.
India have some very good players of spin bowling but England have Jofra Archer and James Anderson along with Ben Stokes who all are masters of reverse swing bowling. An intriguing day 3’s play awaits cricket fans.
