First edition of Lanka Premier League T20 Tournament to start on 28 August

Ever since the grand success of the Indian Premier League (IPL), cricketing nations around the globe tried their hands at organizing their own franchise cricket tournaments in the IPL model. While some like Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and Pakistan Super League were an instant success, most of the others failed to live up to the expectations. One such nation that failed in pulling off a grand franchise league was Sri Lanka. But as per the recent developments the Sri Lankan Cricket Board has now announced that the inaugural edition of the much-awaited Lankan Premier League will begin on August 28.

The much-awaited inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League T20 Tournament got the approval from the Sri Lanka Cricket Executive Committee at the meeting held today (27th July). The league is scheduled to be played from 28th August to 20th September 2020.

To start off with, it will be a 5 team tournament and the teams will be named after the cities of Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla, and Jaffna. The 23 match League will be played across 4 international cricket stadiums including the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Rangiri Dambulu International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, and Suriyawewa Mahinda Rajapakse International Cricket Stadium.

International stars to join the league

Unlike the domestic T20 competition which was held in Sri Lanka over the last few years, this proposed Sri Lankan League will have the participation of Top quality international stars as well as top Sri Lankan players. As of now, over 70 International players and 10 of the leading franchise coaches have already confirmed their availability to take part in this tournament.

The ongoing bidding for the event’s title sponsorship will close on July 30 and the schedule of the tournament will be released afterward.
