The prestigious Bob Willis red ball tournament was postponed like so many other tournaments due to the corona virus pandemic. The tournament finally began on the first of August as the government gave clearance to host the sporting events but international series against West Indies was the first priority then. In the first round of matches that is happening among the 18 teams, in the North Group game, Leicestershire and Derbyshire clashed against each other in Leicester.
The first day first hour is always a difficult time to bat in a red ball match more so in a match in England. The openers always have a tough job at their hands and each player will have his own way to negate the threat of a new ball. One popular approach adopted by many batsmen is playing outside the crease to a new ball bowler to negate the swing on offer.
On the penultimate delivery of the eighth over being bowled by Luis Reece when Hassan Azad comfortably left a delivery outside his off-stump. But the sheer presence of mind and excellent game awareness combined with a bit of carelessness from the batsman led to the wicket of Hassan Azad. Derbyshire Wicket-keeper Harvey Hosein hurled an underarm throw right on target with his gloves after collecting the ball to catch batsman Hassan Azad short of his crease which is a bizzare dismissal – a stumping of a fast bowler.
The shrewd act of the wicket-keeper caught the attention of fans and pundits of cricket around the world and soon Twitter people were lauding the sheer intelligence of Harvey Hosein. The dismissal video began to gain more and more shares with almost everyone acknowledging the smartness of wicket-keeper. Some fans even blamed the batsman for his lack of concentration and game awareness.
Even the Derbyshire Twitter account admin posted the video of the dismissal and captioned it – “ Not something you will see everyday “.
