Watch: Billy Stanlake’s searing bouncer downs batsman in Shield game

The Sheffield Shield game has resumed after Big Bash in Australia. Victoria locked horns with Queensland Bulls in a Sheffield Shield game at the Gabba. Victoria were on the front foot and dominated the day’s play here in Brisbane.

Victoria scored heavily on Day 1 and there was little respite for the bowlers. With not much happening off the wicket Queensland pacers were finding it difficult to contain the batters.

Terrifying bouncer from Billy Stanlake

It was that big man Billy Stanlake who bowled a searing bouncer right at the chest of the batsman Mathew Short. The batsman tried to sway away from the line of the delivery but was struck on the chest.

It left him on the floor and the medics had to rush out to the middle to check out the batsman. The incident happened in the 22nd over of the Victorian innings when Mathew Short was batting on 12.

Tragic incident springs to mind

The batsman laying flat on the floor after being hit on the head or chest is never a good sight on a cricket field. Recently Steve Smith was left with a head injury by Jofra Archer’s bouncer and had to call a concussion substitute on the field in his place.

Another One such incident that immediately springs up in the mind of every follower of cricket is the tragic death of budding cricketer Phil Hughes.
Phil Hughes was struck on the back of his head right beneath the helmet and immediately fell on the pitch with his back turned up.

The medical staff rushed to the middle to check on the batsman and found him unconscious.

He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was in coma for a few days and then lost his battle against life. He will forever be remembered by the cricket fraternity. Phil Hughes was 63 not out forever. His memory etched in the cricket hearts forever.
