The former Indian all-rounder in Irfan Pathan regrets that he missed the opportunity to become the greatest white ball all rounder that India have ever produced in the history of the game. In his latest interview, the 35 year old talks about the things that went wrong in his career.

Irfan Pathan feels he could have achieved a lot more

The all rounder who made his debut for India at the age of 19 in 2003 was seen as the next big thing in the Indian cricket. He was another gem who was groomed under Sourav Ganguly. He excited almost all the Indian cricket fans at that point in time as India were in search for a genuine all rounder then.

But due to unfortunate incidents, his career came to a halt at just 27 years of age. Here’s what Irfan Pathan had to say about his career

In terms of achievement, there could have been a lot more. I really believe that in One-Day Internationals I could have been the best all-rounder that India ever produced, I could have been. That didn’t happen because I didn’t play as much cricket as I could have because my last game for India was at the age of 27

Injuries were one of the main reasons for Irfan Pathan’s start stop career. He made the life of the batsman very difficult when he had the new ball in his hand. He played as a new ball bowling all rounder in his first 59 games in which he racked up 100 wickets but the next 73 wickets came in 61 matches in which he was used as a one change bowler.

Irfan Pathan lacked support from the team mates

The all rounder who got man of the match for his performance in the 2007 WT20 final for his magnificent spell of 4 overs for 16 runs and 3 wickets said that someone from the team should have supported him when he was made the first change bowler.

I actually feel that people from the team should have spoken about it. They should have said that, ‘Yes Irfan used to take wickets, but now we have given him a different role. We have given him the role of first change bowler and someone who can bat at No 7 or No 8, which is very much required in One-Day cricket right now
